EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
