Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
